Europe is starting to suffer from recurring droughts.
July 17, 2019.
In the Vosges mountains located in the north-east of France, more and more fir trees are dying because of lack of water.
Disturbingly low rainfall over much of the Old Continent.
PARIS - France, Spain, Germany, Baltics, Poland ... a good part of Europe is starting to suffer from drought, a phenomenon that is now recurrent on a continent that is not particularly dry.

In France, the lack of rain has been shouting for a year in several regions of the East and Center, according to meteorological services. And the high temperatures of June aggravated the situation.
In the Vosges (East), more and more fir trees are dying on foot, killed by the heat and drought of 2018 followed by the hydric deficit of the beginning of summer.
Yesterday, 61 departments out of the 96 in metropolitan France were placed in water restriction, with the resulting bans (to fill pools, wash vehicles outside professional stations, water, etc.).
"Since September, the rainfall deficit remains 20% on average in France. But areas of the Côte d'Azur reached a rain deficit of 70% or 90%.
ABOVE NORMALS
Without reaching such deficits, Spain received about 25% less rainfall than the average recorded between 1981 and 2010. And this year is the third driest recorded in the 21st century, according to the national meteorological agency AEMET.
Mars and May in particular were "very dry" and several regions are under water stress: Andalusia (southwest), Extremadura (west) and Madrid (center). In addition, after a warmer July than usual, August and September are above seasonal norms.
As a result, the situation for farmers is "worrying", according to their minister Luis Planas.
GERMANY
In Germany, it is mainly the northern regions that are affected, again for lack of sufficient rainfall. On two rivers, the Elbe and the Oder (East), there are restrictions on the passage of boats, as the water level is not high enough.
Although the supply of drinking water is not problematic, the authorities have called the residents parsimoniously.
In Poland, the authorities recently estimated that aridity could affect cereal crops in 14 of the 16 regions, while in Prague, the Academy of Sciences pointed out that it could reach an "exceptional or extreme level". 80% of Czech territory.
In the Baltic countries, which were also badly hit, Lithuania declared an "emergency situation" at the beginning of July.
SINCE 1980
But climatic hazards of this kind are no longer a novelty. Already, in 2009, the European Environment Agency noted that "since 1980, the droughts in Europe (have) increased in number and intensity".
