SEOUL - (AFP) North Korea warned yesterday (July 16, 2019) that imminent military exercises between Washington and Seoul could have repercussions on the announced resumption of its talks with the United States, suggesting that it may reconsider its moratorium on its ballistic and nuclear tests. This is the first North Korean statement on military maneuvers since Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un have agreed, last month during an impromptu meeting in the demilitarized zone that divides the peninsula, to resume nuclear talks after months of blocking. The United States and South Korea have been organizing joint military exercises for years, but the scale has been scaled down to facilitate dialogue with the North following the first summit between the US president and the North Korean leader.
