Commissioning of the powerful Avangard missile.
MOSCOW (AFP) Russia announced yesterday the entry into service of its first Avangard hypersonic missiles, one of the new weapons developed by Moscow and praised by President Vladimir as "Practically invincible".
This system is part of a new generation of missiles capable, according to Moscow, of reaching a target almost anywhere in the world and surpassing any existing anti-missile shield, like the system deployed by the United States in Europe.
‘’ Defense Minister Serguei Choïgou reported to President Putin that the first regiment equipped with the new Avangard hypersonic strategic systems was commissioned at 10 a.m. ’’ said the ministry.
Mr. Choïgou "congratulated" the Russian military, saying that the deployment of the missiles was "a fantastic event for the country and for the armed forces".
In December 2018, the Russian military said the first Avangard missile regiment would be deployed in the Orenburg region of the Urals.
27 TIMES THE SPEED OF SOUND
According to Moscow, the Avangard spins at a speed of Mach 27, 27 times the speed of sound and more than 33,000 kilometers per hour. He is able to change course and altitude, making him "almost invincible", according to the Russian president.
Vladimir Putin had compared the Avangard missiles, successfully tested in December 2018, "to the creation of the first artificial satellite on Earth", a reference to the Sputnik launched in 1957, which symbolized the technological advance of the Soviet Union on the United States in the middle of the Cold War.
"It is the absolute weapon," said the Russian president in June 2018. "I do not think that a single country has such a weapon in the years to come. We already have it, ‘’ he added.

The new balance of terror.
Moscow / Washington in 15 minutes. It’s time for the new Avangard missiles fired from Moscow to hit Washington. These missiles are supposed to travel to Mach 27. No known weapon could stop them.

Their deployment was announced yesterday by the Russian Minister of Defense. Other equally terrifying weapons are on the verge of success: overpowered lasers, missiles with unlimited range, and of course, armies of intelligent drones. These military advances are a game-changer.
1- Are the Russians the only ones to have such powerful hypersonic missiles?
The Russian authorities claim to be years ahead of their closest competitors such as China, the United States, India or France and Germany. The backwardness of the other powers in this area also raises questions about the management of the arms development of these countries.
2- How do these new weapons strengthen Russia?
Russia does not pose a direct threat to the great powers. It would be surprising, but not impossible, for Vladimir Putin to use his new armaments to achieve territorial gains. Thanks to this new arsenal, Russia is once again becoming a serious military partner for several countries. Indeed, Russian territory is better protected than it has been for the past 30 years. Moscow could therefore come to the aid of its allies in a more credible way, that is to say without too much fear of an attack on its territory. Because such fast weapons mean that the main forces of enemy countries can be destroyed before they have time to react. Finally, the prestige of Russian armaments is increasing, which should not be overlooked in the global arms sales market.
3- What are the consequences of the news on geostrategy?
The consequences are many. For example, new weapons are decades ahead of old nuclear weapons. The other major military powers are expected to announce major breakthroughs in these areas within a few years. But it is doubtful whether the small powers will be able to catch up before long. On the other hand, those who are reluctant to endanger the lives of their soldiers, like American leaders, should feel much more free to send troops made up of drones. We are not quite there yet, but this possibility is approaching.
4- Is this a new balance of terror?
We are witnessing the birth of a new balance of terror. Few countries will be able to master new military technologies and will not dare to attack each other directly. The window is therefore closing quickly for small and medium powers that would like to take advantage of the current order to gain territory or influence. So it would be surprising if Iran or North Korea had such advanced weapons before a few decades.
5- What should Canada do?
Canada is condemned to follow the United States in this area. Several Canadian and Quebec researchers refuse to allow their work to be used in the manufacture of this new weapon. Their moral objections are laudable. But the truth is that it is infinitely preferable that democratic countries have this type of weaponry, rather than authoritarian, even totalitarian. The race for new military technologies has been launched for a long time. We have no choice but to devote more resources to it. Better to be on the winning side than on the losing side.
