Roswell's visitors were humans of the future. They did not come from another planet, but from a future Earth - "walking" (which is a better term than "traveling") in the past in 1947 to try to solve the problems of their history.
Their mission was to change their past by creating an alternative branch of their own timeline, so that certain events - which will happen to us in the very near future - do not occur.
Visitors to Roswell were on a purely altruistic mission. They did not have to do that, but they chose to do it ... out of sympathy. But their mission ended catastrophically - not only because they crashed (an accident caused by a high energy radar - the army realized later and made it a weapon), but because they had with them a device that was their only means, such as a device of orientation in time and space, to return home, in their own time.
The device was a small box, highly advanced and multifunctional in nature, smaller than the "Looking Glass" that Dan Burisch and Bill Hamilton5 describe being later used by army scientists in various experiments.
When the box was received and examined by the army, this was a disaster in itself. This made the temporal problem even worse by introducing time portal technology at the wrong time ... and at the same time informing the military of what would happen next.
We can only emphasize the calamitous dimension of the Roswell incident. This was a major setback, just as the projects of the humans of the future began to attempt to solve the temporal problem. The acquisition of a device such as the one owned by Roswell visitors would have immediately altered the timeline that future humans wanted to change first ...
There would therefore be two time lines to repair, instead of one.
