MOSCOW, December 5, TASS - Russia strengthens nuclear capabilities while U.S. strengthens missile defense shield, Russian chief of general staff Valery Gerasimov said at press briefing for attachés foreign military on Wednesday.
"As the United States built its global missile defense shield, Russia increased the combat potential of its strategic ground nuclear forces," said the general.
In particular, the Russian Strategic Missile Force is being rearmed with Yars missile systems and the Avangard missile complex equipped with the hypersonic glider vehicle has gone into series production, the Russian general said.
Russia is developing the Sarmat heavy intercontinental ballistic missile system to replace its more powerful ICBM Voyevoda SS-18 Satan. In 2018, Sarmat successfully passed pop-up tests, he added.

Gerasimov said the United States has the capacity to quickly increase its nuclear strike potential by more than 1,200 nuclear charges.
"Unfortunately, our American partners, in order to reach the quantitative parameters of the New START Treaty, have re-equipped some of their strategic offensive devices for the past 2 years [four launchers on each of the 14 Ohio-class 41 B-52H submarines] and have unilaterally excluded them from the Treaty register. This then gives them the opportunity to develop the potential of their strategic offensive forces in the shortest possible time and to increase the number of warheads by more than 1,200 units, "said Gerasimov.
"Strategic sea-based nuclear forces will be developed through the construction of Borei-A submarines carrying ballistic missiles with the means to overcome the missile shield," he noted.
The potential of strategic airborne nuclear forces is maintained thanks to the modernization of the strategic bombers Tupolev Tu-160 and Tu-95MS. Russia is in the process of equipping these aircraft with more powerful engines, modern on-board equipment and expanding the range of their armaments, the general said.
Russia is also in the process of setting up the space and ground levels of its missile early warning system, said Gerasimov.
Russia has also completed the creation of the continuous radar field along its borders, the general noted. "This has ensured the detection of ballistic missiles in all dangerous directions and by any type of flight path," said Gerasimov.
