INTRODUCTION
In the decade of the 1977s, strange phenomena began to occur on the coast and in the interior of the States of Para and Maranhao. News came from all sides and the depositions were unanimous: mysterious light beams, projected by unidentified flying objects, which in the majority of cases appear at night, burning men and women. Chasing people, taking the blood from its victims, they were behind the expression "Chupa-Chupa," the name by which the phenomenon became popularly known. In other regions, mainly in that of Maranhao, the phenomenon became known under the name ‘’ aparelho. ’’
The phenomenon, despite a long period of interruption, has never manifested itself with such force and uniformity before in the history of national ufology. In a few short weeks, the news crossed all the states of Para and Maranhao, taking the population by surprise, generating a climate of terror and collective panic. Motivated by curiosity and with the objective of shedding light on the mystery of the Chupa-Chupa, we undertook a research that took us to several counties of Para. We tried, but due to our limited financial resources and the time available, it was not possible that we could cover all of Para and Maranhao. We hope that in the near future someone can complete this research.
What we will expose in this article will not consist of fables invented by backward loggers or various residents of the interior and the coast of Para. We will be faithful to the facts and to the written statements. Each interview was noted with care and attention. To do this, we chose the most logical reports, those whose story agrees with other additional depositions, and whose competence of witnesses was an element of validity. The objective of this work is to form a real image and a historical outline of one of the most impressive UFO manifestations that we can know.
NEWS IN NEWSPAPERS :
The first part of this research consists of a bibliographic overview of all the articles and reports published in the periodicals of the State of Para, such as '' Provincia Do Para '', '' O Liberal '' and '' Estado Do Para. '' However, the same approach was not possible with the Maranhao press, for the reasons described above. We have read all the articles from the periodicals cited and believe that the Para press has reported in a very interesting way on the development of the Chupa-Chupa phenomenon. All the articles were widely illustrated and written at the scene of the incidents, as well as the testimonies… If today, we can reconstruct this wave of UFOs, it is thanks to the press and to the competence of the public library of Belem .
Several ufological news preceded the Chupa-Chupa wave, but the most significant article was in ‘’ O Libéral of 07/16/1977, where we could read:
The UFO photographed in Montevideo, spherical in shape, rivals in detail with the strange objects seen in several places in Para, along the Maranhao Coast and the Gurupi River and all along the Para-Maranhao border. Even yesterday, these objects were observed in several places inside Maranhao, frightening the population, in the same way as what occurs in the sector of Vizeu in the Para. "
A few days earlier, on 07/12/1977 to be precise, the Jornal Da Bahia, had reported clearly what would become the Chupa-Chupa phenomenon :
Flying objects that emit fantastic light scare the Para :Belem (AJB) - A fantastic story about a flying object emitting a strong light and sucking the blood of people, circulates by word of mouth among the population of the counties of Braganca, Vizeu and Augusto Correa in Para, where out of fear , many people leave their homes overnight, so as not to be caught by the light-vampire emitted by the strange object which, according to our information, has already caused the death of 2 men. No one knows how the story started, but the truth is that it reached Belem and made headlines in local newspapers. "
Months later, on October 8, 1977, O ’O Liberal’ ’launched the first in a series of articles, educating people about the Chupa-Chupa phenomenon. The report begins in a striking way:
Sucking animals attack men and women in the village of Vigia: A strange phenomenon occurred for several weeks in the village of Vigia, more precisely in Vila Santo Antonio Do Imbituba, about 7 kilometers from the PA road -140, following the appearance of an object which focuses a white light above people, immobilizing them for almost an hour, and sucking the breasts of women and leaving them bleeding. The Object, known by locals as the "Bicho Voador" (or flying animal) or "Bicho Sugador" (sucking animal), has the shape of a rounded vessel and attacks isolated people ( mainly women), but also attacked a few men… One of the many victims in the sector was Ms. Rosita Ferreira, married, 46, living in Ramai Do Triunfo, who a few days ago was sucked by the light on the left breast, and lost consciousness. More and more, it all seemed like a nightmare to her, she felt like she was struggling with a few claws trying to hold her. She was attacked around 3:30 a.m. Another victim was a woman known as ‘’ ’Chiquita,’ ’who was also sucked by the strange object on her bloody breast, but left no marks.’’
CHUPA-CHUPA :
It was then on 10/16/1977 that O LIBERAL launched for the first time the expression "Chupa-Chupa" as we could read in the first paragraph of his article.
Chupa-Chupa: it was the name given by the population of Vigia to an unidentified flying object, which created panic among the inhabitants of Imbituba, Camaru and Km-25, as in other localities located near these cities. ''
Subsequently, until the end of mid-November 1977, the Para newspapers continued to publish articles bringing the Chupa-Chupa to the attention of the public. The journal APROVINCIA DO PARA published on 20/10/1977, 19/11/1977 and 20/11/1977 reports valid for ufology research. On October 20 there were two full pages with people's stories, graphs of the evolution of UFOs in the skies of Vigia and the strange ones of Ci 2 (Hynek CE-I) noted by Colonel Manoel Matos de Souza ( known by Coronha), recorded in the small village of Monte Serrado, in the county of Santo Antonio de Tauà (PA). This 44-year-old farmer was woken up around 2 to 3 in the morning by a strong light which revolved around his quarters and entered his cabin. When he opened the door, he encountered a flying object with two creatures inside. He returned to the room, and now carrying a loaded weapon, tried to shoot in the direction of the vehicle. To his surprise, the weapon did not fire and, feeling the paralysis overcome his body due to the light of the UFO, he shouted for help.
On 11/19/1977, A PROVINCIA DO PARA published, for the first time, photographs of possible lesions caused by chupa-chupa, recorded on the young Aurora Nascimento Fernandes, 18 years old, living in Passagem Tabatinga, in the neighborhood from Jurunas (Belem). Aurora was washing dishes around 9:00 a.m. on 11/18/1977 in her house when a strong blast of cold air amazed her, along with a strong, reddish light. The young woman reports :
‘’ I was scared. I called my mother and before she arrived, a strong red light enveloped me, leaving me stunned. At the same time, I felt really fine punctures hitting my breast, and fell to the ground and passed out. ’’
Subsequently, Dr. Orlando Zoghbi, after seeing the patient, classified the fact as an episode of hysteria and panic produced by collective psychosis around the phenomenon of Chupa-chupa. According to Dr. Zoghbi, by the configuration of the marks, the actual wounds on Aurora's right breast were caused by the contraction of her hands squeezing her chest (above the breast), in an instinctive act of protection against a possible attack of Chupa-chupa. We strongly disagree, because the marks appeared to be concentrated and deep (like biopsies) in a small area, no traces of scratches or injuries looked like nail marks.
In conversation with the researcher and student of the UFO phenomenon, Professor Fabio Zerpa (ONIFE) 1, he observed that similar facts, before the descriptions by Aurora and other women of Para who indicated that they were victims of Chupa-chupa, occurred in southern Argentina in the 1970s when women were attacked by an entity that took her blood. It is interesting to note that the events described occurred in towns and villages in the vicinity of rivers, lakes or seas. This prompts us to recall the Japanese mythological entities called the "Kappas" who, according to legend, came from a distant star and populated the rivers (or seas) of Japan. The Belgian researchers Scornaux et Piens, in their excellent work ‘’ A Descoberta dos UFOs ’’ Discovering UFOs), report :
‘’The Kappas seem to be using a submarine, or something similar, powered by a breathing device as well as some sort of strange helmet with antennas. The ears are abnormally large. The skin is copper-colored (see the bronze men who appeared at the Utinga reservoir, in the county of Belem, during the Chupa-chupa period) the hands and feet are like hooks. This description reminds us of some humanoids observed today, and the reputation that the Kappas had of making people sick when they came into contact with them, makes us think of the physiological effects, experienced on certain current witnesses ‘’
The phenomenon in Colares
Colares Island is located approximately 70 kilometers northeast of the town of Belem. It borders the county of Vigia, another region rich in apparitions and ufological cases. At its front is the Bay of Marajö which is itself separated from the mainland by the Guajarà-Mirim river. Colares covers an area of approximately 600 square kilometers and is home to several communities, such as Vila de Colares (the county seat). Fazenda, Mocajatuba, Ariri and others. The vast majority of its population is engaged in fishing and farming.
During the Chupa-chupa period, Colares was the target of intensive UFO appearances and several victims of the mysterious rays were detected. Fear was such that many of the Island's residents abandoned their homes and temporarily went to live with relatives in other counties.
CIPEX2 has located several witnesses to the phenomenon during the days it remained in Colares.
Let's see some cases :
1.Jonas Ferreira Gondim, a 60-year-old married fisherman, admits that at that time his house was illuminated by the light of the Chupa. Taking his courage in both hands, he went out into his yard and set fire to a firecracker to scare away "the apparelho". His son, Claudio Gondim, told us: at that time, we were not sleeping well. Me and a few other colleagues went out to guard the homes of our friends. One night, I saw this machine above the treetops, there on the street of San Joao. She suddenly stopped and emitted a clear light on the trees and immediately rose at high speed to another side of the village. "
2.Mr. Zacarias Dos Santos Barata, 74, married, admits: "I have seen this machine in the area twice. The first time, it came from the direction of Source (Marajo Island) and flew over the village at a really high speed. The second time, I saw here from the house a luminous ball which came by illuminating all the countryside of Luzio. It made no noise and it was not sharp enough to be seen properly, because its light was very strong, and of a bluish color. The same light was observed by its neighbor, Julio de Brito Correia, 70, who simply adds that the vessel had flown low and at high speed.
3.Carpenter Carlos Cardoso de Paula, 45, married, writes two curious events. We read :‘’ During the Chupa era, I went out many times at night to visit the homes of friends and colleagues. Most of them met on the street, making a fire, frying fish. From time to time, they would make noise with pistols and cans to scare the Chupas ... Once, when I left the house around 9 p.m., we heard people yelling: "Here is the Chupa coming" , here from the house, I only saw a ball of fire that came quickly in our direction, but soon it changed course, entering another street. A strange thing happened at another time, second story:
‘’ We were all asleep in the house and I was still smoking my last cigarette when suddenly, through the edge of the roof of the house, a small ball of fire entered. This thing started going up around the room, until it got to my hammock. She climbed up my right leg to the knee. I looked at all of this with great curiosity when this ball went over to the other leg and I started to feel weak and sleepy. The cigarette fell from my hand and, frightened of this situation, I shouted. The little ball disappeared and everyone woke up. I think she was looking for a vein in my body, but she was unlucky ... When she increased her radiance, I felt a kind of heat ... ’’
Probes :
The account of Mr. Carlos de Paula, without counting its bizarre side, indicates to us that this small ball, in reality, could be a kind of probe, because the characteristics described by the witness suggest it. During our research, we located two people in Vila de Colares who had been victims of Chupa-chupa. The clinical picture of this phenomenon will be better detailed in the description of the testimonies we have collected there.
The first came from the merchant Neuton de Oliveira Cardoso, 27, married and residing in Vila de Mocajatuba at that time. One night he woke up sick, feeling "warmth" all over his body and, frightened, he noted that he was burned at neck height on the left side. His family members transported him the next day to Vila Dos Colares for an appointment with the doctor. Neuton's comments: "I became very weak and without courage for several days and still feel strong torture and a headache." The second victim was Mrs. Claudomira Rodrugues da Paixao, 43 years old, married, popularly known as Mirota's name. ”She was struck in the breast by the light of the Chupa-chupa while she was asleep at her parents' home. It was near midnight and she was sleeping in a hammock next to the window, when she was intrigued by an intense glow: quickly, she felt a heat above the body which paralyzed her, when then a focused beam greenish light was projected over his chest, and withdrew immediately. But it was too late and "Mirota" already had burns on the left breast.
For several days, she felt great weakness and strong headaches that come back from time to time always bothering her. Later, she was taken to the Instituto Medico Légal Renato Chaves (Belèm) for further examinations. Years ago, she was visited by two foreign researchers who arrived with an interpreter on the island in a passenger plane. Ms. Claudomira certifies: ‘’ The moment the fire hit me, I felt needle-like punctures above my chest. Later, I didn't feel any pain, except for the headaches and great weariness that kept me in the hammock for several days ... ’’
Secret reports :
At the beginning of the rumors of curious UFO appearances, inside Para and in Maranhao, heightened by the panic of the population about the phenomenon, the 1st regional air command (1st COMAR) 3, located in Belèm, launched an in-depth study operation in the field with the intention of clarifying the enigma of the Chupa-chupa phenomenon. The order of command was as follows:
1. The UFO phenomenon deserves an objective and in-depth study:
2. All information related to this phenomenon must be collected:
3. Public statements and comments on the subject should be avoided.
At that time, the Air Force sent researchers to several of the counties where the presence of UFOs had been detected, so that hundreds of first-hand and second-hand reports and nearly 200 photographs of the strange UFO objects have been collected. The hottest places were Maia Do Sol (Mosqueiro Island) and Colares Island (Para). In these regions, several photographs of UFOs were taken, mostly at night, and also some short films, recording the evolution of the vessels.
The majority of the photographs were taken with professional cameras (Canon, Nikon) paired and remote-controlled, using Kodak film of 1000 asa, black and white, with equipment belonging to the military. At the end of the field research, the second phase of the operation was launched, which included the preparation of a report and an analysis of the identified data. This report of about 500 pages including photographs of UFOs, diagrams, maps, interviews, photocopies of press articles and clippings from local newspapers, were sent to the upper echelons of the military command (EMFA), as well than all existing photographic documentation (films, negatives, photographic prints).
The results obtained by this, show widely that the phenomenon of Chupa-chupa was general and of ufological nature, and that it is difficult to indicate with objectivity the origin and the goal of these things.
Evidence :
In ufology research, it is not enough to collect and archive cases. It is necessary to examine them, compare them with others and subject them to several critiques (internally and externally).
The climate that the 1977 wave of Para produced among the population is complex and rich in data; all sectors of society have been affected and the opinions disclosed evoke the most diverse possibilities. The press has done an excellent job, communicating the cases, while allowing themselves on the one hand by high-level svepticism, and on the other hand, by the inexperience of the UFO camp. However, these little bickering are understandable and normal. But the same opinion is unacceptable when it is the position of the scientific, political and military community which is still fleeing while hiding under old anti-UFO pretexts. This omission was planned, being partly deliberate.
Tactics of this nature are well identified among researchers and publicists of the reality of UFOs. This did not prevent the secret search of the Air Force, not facing ridicule, the "prophets" announcing the arrival of the Martians and now still the tactic of confusion with the assertions of some professionals liberals with their "famous" convenient explanations.
CONCLUSIONS :
This research, despite its limitations, allowed us to make a relevant sampling of the UFO wave of the 1970s in Para. We highlight a few points :
1.The theater of action was the north of Brazil, with frequent sightings on the banks of rivers and the Atlantic Ocean;
2. UFOs appeared in the majority of cases during the night, daytime observations being rare.
3. The depositions confirm the presence of vessels - not always coming from the sky or always disappearing in the sky;
4.Whatever the small vessels, everything indicates that they were some sort of probes, because of their aerodynamic and behavioral profile, such as extremely bright and round objects, rapid movements, low altitude flight, emission of light beams and chases of people;
5.The burns produced by UFOs were not accidental, but demonstrated an objective. Men and women were the goal, preferably aimed during their sleep;
6.There is no absolute evidence that UFOs have drawn blood from their victims, but on the other hand, biochemical and clinical examinations performed by Dr. Wellaide CC de Oliveira certify low hemoglobin in the victim's hemogram, not to mention the very special clinical picture of people who have lost a considerable amount of blood (headaches, weakness and chronic fainting, preventing the victims from standing on their legs) including the presence of "marks of stings" in the regions struck by the rays emitted by UFOs;
7.Information references about the occupants of the vessels were rare, but they point to the presence of medium-sized beings and of a green and wrinkled skin;
8. There is a specific objective of great importance which precipitated the invasion of UFOs in the coasts of Para and Maranhao.
Everything leads us to believe that the phenomenon that the global phenomenon was a far-reaching mission, not only by the frequency of observations, but by the large number of objects seen. The choice of locations was due to their strategic positions and the security they provided for UFO action (geographic isolation, remoteness, and small population centers). The objective of this invasion is (probably) related to research and biological manipulation of humans by foreigners, whose aims we have not been able to elucidate.

1.The theater of action was the north of Brazil, with frequent sightings on the banks of rivers and the Atlantic Ocean;
2. UFOs appeared in the majority of cases during the night, daytime observations being rare.
3. The depositions confirm the presence of vessels - not always coming from the sky or always disappearing in the sky;
4.Whatever the small vessels, everything indicates that they were some sort of probes, because of their aerodynamic and behavioral profile, such as extremely bright and round objects, rapid movements, low altitude flight, emission of light beams and chases of people;
5.The burns produced by UFOs were not accidental, but demonstrated an objective. Men and women were the goal, preferably aimed during their sleep;
6.There is no absolute evidence that UFOs have drawn blood from their victims, but on the other hand, biochemical and clinical examinations performed by Dr. Wellaide CC de Oliveira certify low hemoglobin in the victim's hemogram, not to mention the very special clinical picture of people who have lost a considerable amount of blood (headaches, weakness and chronic fainting, preventing the victims from standing on their legs) including the presence of "marks of stings" in the regions struck by the rays emitted by UFOs;
7.Information references about the occupants of the vessels were rare, but they point to the presence of medium-sized beings and of a green and wrinkled skin;
