Kim "guided a new long-range artillery strike exercise," KCNA reports on Tuesday after the firing of what appeared to be Tokyo ballistic missiles.
More than a year after the fiasco of the second summit between Kim and US President Donald Trump, North Korea has continued to work on developing its weapons programs, experts say.
Rodong Sinmun, the official body of the ruling Workers' Party in the North, has published photos showing rockets fired from multiple launchers with four launch tubes, targeting what appears to be an island.
Other shots show smaller caliber projectiles and artillery firing rounds.

Wearing a Russian-style chef's hat and a beige military jacket, Kim appears in a photo of the binoculars in his hand, flanked by an officer wearing a black mask.
North Korea has closed its borders and taken drastic measures to try to prevent the spread of the coronavirus epidemic on its soil.
The South Korean Unification Ministry said on Tuesday that the three shooting exercises that Kim had supervised in the past two weeks were his first military activities since the beginning of the year.
"This aims, internally, to strengthen solidarity, and externally, to attract the attention of the United States and South Korea and to push them to change their attitude "Said the ministry in a statement.
North Korea is under multiple sanctions from the United Nations Security Council, which aim to push it to give up its banned nuclear and ballistic programs.
The peninsula had experienced a spectacular relaxation in 2018, but diplomatic efforts have stalled since the failure of the Hanoi summit between MM. Kim and Trump.
Pyongyang had unilaterally donated to Washington until the end of 2019 to make further concessions. And in late December, Kim announced that his country, therefore, no longer felt bound by its moratorium on nuclear tests and intercontinental ballistic missile fire.
He also threatened to demonstrate a "new strategic weapon" soon.
