"Several missiles" that are said to be "short-range cruise missiles" were fired from the eastern city of Munchon, the South Korean army general said in a statement.
The tests come on the eve of parliamentary elections in South Korea and the 108th anniversary of the birth of the regime’s founder Kim Il-sung, the grandfather of current leader Kim Jong-un.
They were carried out while the attention of the international community focused on the fight against the pandemic of new coronavirus. Pyongyang claims to be free from COVID-19.
In recent years, North Korea, an atomic bomb country, has fired numerous ballistic missiles, missiles propelled very high in the air and which fall at a very fast speed towards their target due to the gravity .
The country also has ICBMs (intercontinental ballistic missiles) capable of reaching all of the continental United States.
Cruise missiles, for their part, remain at low altitude, sometimes only a few meters from the surface, which makes them more difficult to detect. They require very sophisticated guidance systems in order to reach their target.
"Precision"
The missiles fired on Tuesday were launched towards the Sea of Japan, or East Sea according to the Korean name, before being damaged at sea, indicated the combined Korean chief of staff.
Soukhoï and MiG fighter jets also flew over the east coast city of Wonsan and fired air-to-ground rockets, a spokesman added.
"South Korea and the American intelligence services are closely examining the questions relating to" the shootings, the statement said.
North Korea has demonstrated that it has "different options" for delivery of weapons, Cha Du-Hyeogn, a researcher at the Asan Institute for Political Studies in Seoul, told AFP.
"Ballistic missiles attest to its destructive power and cruise missiles to its precision," he said. "So far, North Korea has shown its strength and now shows its accuracy by hitting targets."
Pyongyang is subject to multiple sanctions from the United Nations Security Council forcing it to give up its banned nuclear and ballistic programs.
Cruise missile tests do not violate UN resolutions on ballistic missile technology, experts say.
North Korea has carried out numerous missile tests over the past few months, which it describes as very large multiple-rocket launchers when others call them ballistic missiles.
In the past, it has already fired cruise missiles.
"Between provocation and dialogue"
In June 2017, Pyongyang was pleased to have successfully tested a new ground-to-sea cruise missile intended to strike any "enemy" vessel that threatened North Korea.
Pyongyang then claimed that "the cruise missiles launched have accurately detected floating targets in the East Sea of Korea".
The launch came after naval maneuvers in which two American aircraft carriers had participated in the area the previous week.
These craft had traveled approximately 200 kilometers before being damaged at sea.
In 2017, Kim Jong-un and US President Donald Trump exchanged insults and brandished threats of nuclear apocalypse, before a historic rapprochement the following year.
These discussions have stalled since the fiasco of the second summit between MM. Trump and Kim, in February 2019 in Hanoi.
The missiles fired on Tuesday covered about 150 kilometers, according to Seoul.
Go Myong-hyun, an analyst at the Asan Institute, said that opting for a short range was probably a deliberate choice by Pyongyang.
"North Korea has still not decided on the strategic position to adopt between provocation and dialogue," he told AFP.
"She is cautious. It fires missiles to raise the tension, but the tension level is not that high, "he added. "At this point, I wouldn’t be surprised if North Korea made other provocations or suddenly said it was ready to dialogue."
