Chronology of the UFO Commission of Inquiry.
1947 :
September 23: Estimate of the Situation ("Estimate of the Situation") is the name of a report from Project Sign, a UFO science project created by the US Air Force. There is an official version published by the Pentagon on December 10, 194846 and an earlier, unofficial secret report written in 1948 by the Sign project staff and made public in 1956. In the secret report, Sign's scientists explain how the extraterrestrial hypothesis is, according to them, the most plausible to explain the nature of the most mysterious UFOs, before the document was rejected and destroyed in 1960. The official report of the Pentagon indicates that UFOs were "either not real or from unknown technology from the USSR "47.
1949 :
Project Sign is replaced by Project Grudge.
1952 :
The Grudge project is dissolved and replaced by the Blue Book project, a true scientific study, led by Captain Edward J. Ruppelt.
1968 :
The physicist Edward U. Condon of the University of Colorado is commissioned by the US military to study the phenomenon of UFOs. After three years of study, his report will conclude the lack of scientific interest and the absence of evidence of the existence of extraterrestrial devices. Astronomer J. Allen Hynek, director of Northwestern University's Lindheimer Observatory and US Air Force technical advisor, intervenes in the debate to denounce the scientists' campaign of contempt for public opinion. A vast press campaign is developing against the campaign of systematic denigration of scientists. This press campaign is supported by local politicians, including future President Gerald Ford.
The US military validates the findings of the Condon Report.
1969 :
The Blue Book project is officially closed.
1977 :
Under the leadership of Claude Poher, CNES created the first official French scientific UFO research body: the GEPAN (Study Group on Unidentified Aerospace Phenomena), while the IHEDN (Institute of Advanced National Defense Studies) ) write a report recommending the study of UFOs. The GEPAN supports the idea that it would be "flying machines of unknown origin"
1983 :
In France, GEPAN's activities are now reduced to a minimum.
1987 :
GEPAN is finally dissolved and replaced by SEPRA (Atmospheric Revenues Department), under the direction of Jean-Jacques Velasco.
2004 :
In France, SEPRA is included in CNES.
2005 :
In France, CNES creates the GEIPAN (Study and Information Group on Unidentified Aerospace Phenomena).
2007
In France, GEIPAN publishes its archives related to NAPs (unidentified aerospace phenomena).
