(.#B.021).- Atomic bombs to bomb a hurricane, bad idea.
Bomb a hurricane: bad idea.
Thursday, September 5, 2019.
While Hurricane Dorian in the US is wreaking havoc, the idea of sending a nuclear charge into the eye of hurricanes to deflect them from their road before they land is still in the news.
Hurricane Dorian
Donald Trump himself would have suggested, according to the news site Axios, statements later denied by the US president, but confirmed by the journalist. Fake news or not, this proposal comes back every hurricane season. But this is a very bad idea ... unless you want to create a radioactive hurricane.
COMPARATIVES :
• 30,000 tonnes of TNT per hour generated by the power of a hurricane
during its life cycle.
• 15,000 tons of TNT released by the powerful Hiroshima bomb.
SCENARIO :
1. A submarine would position itself under the watch of the hurricane and fire one or more nuclear missiles.
• (Negligible effect of the shock wave, it would be felt a few dozen kilometers away, and would not result in a change in atmospheric pressure, once passed.)
• (Radioactive rain: the radioactivity would be captured by the humidity of the hurricane, and the trade winds would discharge this radioactivity onto the land.)
• (Destruction of the aquatic environment: Fallout over an area spread over thousands of kilometers would contaminate the site for hundreds of years.
2. The atomic explosion would propel hot air into the heart of the hurricane
into the stratosphere.
3. The hot air in the center of the hurricane would be replaced by more air
colder and denser which would slow down and weaken the cyclone.
Nuclear mushroom caused by the Baker explosion in 1946 - Power 23kt.
SHOCK WAVE :
• Diameter of the nuclear mushroom: 10km.
• Hurricane diameter: 1000 km.
DOES NOT DO
• Too big: According to the US Ocean and Atmospheric Observing Agency, to downgrade a Category 5-2 hurricane, 500 million tonnes of air would have to be added in a 20-kilometer cyclone eye radius. There is no practical way to do it.
• It is illegal: The treaty on peaceful nuclear explosions prohibits multiple explosions of more than 1.5 megatons.
