Deforestation has almost doubled in the Brazilian Amazon, 9 Sept. 2019.
Monday, September 9, 2019.
While deforestation has been racing since May 2019, scientists fear there will be more fire this month.
Experts estimate that 10,000 square kilometers of forest could disappear this year.
RIO DE JANEIRO (AFP) Amazon deforestation in Brazil nearly doubled between January-August 2019 and the same period of 2018, affecting a total of 6404.4 square kilometers in total (against 3336.7 square kilometers), according to the data. Provisional official provided yesterday.
This represents an increase of 91.9%. Just for the month of August, 1700.8 square kilometers disappeared, less than in July (when the figures had quadrupled), but more than three times more than in August 2018 (526.5 square kilometers) according to the DETER satellite warning system from the National Institute for Space Investigations (INPE).
Deforestation has been over the last four months: 738.2 square kilometers in May, 936.3 square kilometers in June, 2255 square kilometers in July and now 1700.8 square kilometers in August 2019.
Experts estimate that the figure of 10,000 km2 could be reached this year for the first time since 2008.
Specialists and conservationists explain this increase in deforestation by pressure from foresters and pastoralists encouraged by the support of Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro to open indigenous reserves and protected areas to develop these activities as well as mining prospecting.
FIRE
According to experts, there should be more outbreaks in September in the Amazon region because "the peak of deforestation takes place in July and the fire in September," noted Ane Alencar, the scientific director of the Institute for Environmental Investigations in the Amazon (IPAM).
Meanwhile, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was operated with "success" yesterday an incisional hernia, linked to previous operations suffered after being stabbed during the presidential campaign a year ago, said his surgeon.
This is the fourth operation for Mr. Bolsonaro, who arrived Saturday night at the Vila Nova Star Hospital in Sao Paulo.
The head of state had mentioned the operation to explain his absence to the summit of the countries of the Amazon that was held Friday and Saturday in Colombia to discuss measures to protect the largest tropical forest in the world.
