The huge forest fires raging in eastern Australia may last weeks, the authorities warned yesterday, speaking of "Herculean" efforts to protect endangered homes.
More than 130 fires were reported in the Queensland and New South Wales states, marking a particularly early and virulent beginning of the forest fire season. They are the result of prolonged drought, but are also fanned by strong winds.
Hundreds of people have been evacuated on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland. Videos posted on social networks showed impressive flames rising in the middle of a forest night and falling a rain of ashes glowing. A thousand firefighters were mobilized at night throughout the state.
And across the country, thousands of acres of forest went up in smoke and dozens of homes were ravaged, mostly in New South Wales.
